Obligations for Lent: (also see HERE)
The Church has two forms of official penitential practices observed during lent, abstinence and fasting.
- Ash Wednesday (13-February) and Good Friday (29-March) are days of fast and abstinence. Those between ages 18 and 59 are obligated to fast. From the age of 14 all are required to abstain from eating meat.
- Fasting: One full meal per day, with two smaller meals if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. The fast is broken by eating between meals and by drinks that could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk). Alcoholic beverages do not break the fast; however, they seem contrary to the spirit of doing penance.
- Abstinence: Abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Moral theologians have traditionally considered this also to forbid soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste.
Failure to observe a given penitential day (as outlined above) in itself is not considered serious. It is the failure to observe any penitential days that is considered serious.
Recconcilation Schedule: Confessions will be held every Monday during Lent, from February18h to March 18th 2013, from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM. This is part of the diocesan initiative to invite all Catholics to experience the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. If you have been reluctant to come to the
Sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon
Confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with Christ and His Church. Don’t be afraid! Information will be provided, just ask.
